We’ve included this page to provide additional tips and information to guests who have booked weeks at Summer Paradise this summer. History Summer Paradise was built in 1998. During its first six summers it was lightly used as a private vacation home. 2004 was the first season it was rented out. Summer Paradise House Book Click Here to see or print a copy of the Summer Paradise House Information Book that provides useful tips and information on the house during your stay. (Updated 2/24/2005) Free Beach Chair and Umbrella Cabana Service For guests staying between Memorial Day to Labor Day, we have paid the Buck Island Beach Cabana Service to set up six beach chairs and an umbrella for you daily on the beach in front of the house. These chairs and umbrella have the Buck Island logo on them and the right most ones in front of Summer Paradise are for your exclusive use. In the rare event that someone else tries using them, just explain to them they’re yours, or if you are more comfortable you can walk up to the Buck Island Cabana Service and tell them you are staying at Summer Paradise and they will walk back with you and handle it. The house next door also provides chairs but the ones for Summer Paradise are the six on the right. If you want additional chairs or umbrellas delivered, you can pay the Cabana Service $15 a week or $5 per day per extra chair. Call them at 252-453-4981 to arrange for more chairs or umbrellas. The Cabana Service also sells refreshments, and rents surfboards and kayaks. It is open Memorial Day through Labor Day. We additionally provide six Twiddy beach chairs in the box near the walkway for you to take down to the beach and six additional folding aluminum chairs in the garage.
Extras at the house Pack lightly, we usually have the following items available at the house. Umbrella stroller; battery powered toddler riding car; porta-crib, booster seat, baby gates; bathroom scales, toddler deck chairs; crib mattress for kids who want to sleep in parents room (bring linens); assorted boogie and skim boards; 2-person ocean kayak, three adult and four youth bikes, air compressor for bikes, cars and inflatable toys; fish nets; sand toys including shovels, pails, sand castle forms; kites; inflatable pool toys; frisbees, beach balls, sport balls; 17 beach chairs (11 off season); floating pool chairs and lounge mats; playing cards, puzzles, board games ,books, DVD’s, video’s and telescope. Arrival Strategies While the house, driveway and private pool are not available for you use until the house keepers are done at 4 PM check in time, the Buck Island beach access and community pool are available for your use late morning on your check in day. Arriving before 1 PM is a great way to avoid traffic and get an extra day at the beach! Parking spaces are available next to the Buck Island community beach access at the corner of Orion and Voyager. There are also 10 spaces at the Buck Island community pool at the entrance. Both the Buck Island community beach and pool have restrooms and the Buck Island beach sells refreshments. In our experience, there are usually parking spaces available in both places early Sunday afternoon even during peak season. Once at the Buck Island Community Beach, take a right and walk down the beach for a minute or two until you see the walkway with the teal Summer Paradise sign. In front of the walkway will be the green umbrella and six beach chairs that were set up for you that morning (Memorial Day - Labor Day only, see picture above). In order to provide time for house keeping, pool and hot tub servicing, the keys to the house cannot be picked up until the 4 PM check in time. Because the keys need to be picked up back in Duck it usually makes sense to have at least one person in your party arrive in town later at around 4 pm and pick up the keys in Duck on their way in. Otherwise, someone will have to spend another hour in the car driving to Duck and back to get them. Be aware that the Food Lion gets very busy on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Wait until evening if you can. Arriving by Car. In our experience the traffic on Sundays is nonexistent compared to the tie ups experienced by those arriving on Saturdays. If you arrive before 2pm or after 6pm you will not experience any delays at all unless there is an accident somewhere. People have come up with many alternate routes to the Outer Banks to deal with the Saturday traffic congestion. These alternate routes all take much, much longer and are not necessary on Sundays.
Once past Duck, continue up NC12 for about 10 miles past Pine Island and Ocean Sands. The entrance to Buck Island is on the right just before you get to the light at the Food Lion shopping center. Once in Buck Island drive straight and make a right onto Voyager. At the cul-de-sac turn into the last ocean front at 749 Voyager. The worst traffic is usually on 95 just south of Washington, DC. If coming from western Maryland or Pennsylvania using Rt 17 through Warrenton Virginia from either I-81 or Rt 15 can save time bypassing the Washington DC traffic. Please use NC-12 after crossing the Wright Memorial Bridge. The town of Southern Shores will have police monitoring cut through traffic using Dogwood Trail and other residential streets. Arriving by Air A new airline is offering affordable scheduled flights from Norfolk Airport directly into Pine Island Airfield located just 7 minutes south of Summer Paradise. They also offer charter flights from most locations in the eastern USA. Click for info on SeaAir. Rental cars can be arranged at Pine Island Airfield. Currituck County Beach Laws Currituck Country prohibits fireworks. During times of dangerous surf conditions the Lifeguards will post red flags along the beach. When red flags are up it is against the law to swim, wade or even dip your toes in the ocean. The only exception is surfing with a real surf board 5 feet or longer which is permitted when red flags are up. When surfing with a real surf board you must use a leg tether. That’s it, enjoy the beach! |
